9 Tips for an Easy Summer Move:

Summertime is the busiest moving season of the year and can be one of the least convenient times to move. But, sometimes this is just what fits our schedules and the kids are out of school. To make any Summer move easier and more efficient, our team at 1,2,3 Moving & Storage have come up with a list of 9 things that will make any move as easy as 1,2,3!
  1. DON’T move in the Summer!

  2. It’s the busiest season with the highest costs. According to US Census data, nearly 65 percent of all moves take place from May to September. Moving in the summer is like trying to book a flight on Thanksgiving or Christmas; prices are higher, schedules are squeezed and the industry simply doesn’t have enough capacity to meet the demand. If you can’t avoid moving in the summer, which is probably the case since you’re reading this article… don’t worry take a deep breath and keep reading we have solutions for you.
  3. PLAN ahead.

  4. No matter when you are moving it is always important to plan. We recommend starting your research early, begin planning a couple months ahead of your move date, and book your movers at least six weeks ahead of time.
  5. Schedule your move day on the LEAST BUSY days of the week.

  6. Book your move day in the middle of the weekday in the middle of the month. Most people move in the beginning or end of the month, so picking a day in the middle will ensure you get your day and best price. Especially avoid Memorial Day weekend and the last weekend in July – those are the 1st and 2nd busiest moving days of the year.
  7. Be REALISTIC about PACKING.

  8. Most people want to save money by packing themselves, but work obligations and life gets in the way. Packing is one of the most tedious of tasks and it can also be overwhelming causing people to procrastinate. We find that a lot of people who pack themselves don’t finish in time. This forces movers to wait until the packing is done, which ends up increasing the price anyway. The time and headache isn’t worth packing yourself, consider having the movers (who are also trained on proper packing methods) do your packing for you.
  9. Plan for some LEEWAY TIME in your SCHEDULE.

  10. Always add in enough time for something to delay the move. The possibilities are endless; from truck breakdowns to unforeseen personal circumstances. And most importantly, plan to take an extra day off from work. If you end up not needing it, you get to have a day of relaxation (which we all need).
  11. Know what NOT to put in the moving van.

  12. Candles can melt all over your other stuff and although it might smell good having melted wax all over your items isn’t a good thing. Leather furniture will “sweat” when wrapped in plastic (cut slits in the plastic wrap to let that leather couch breathe). If CD’s, videos and cassette tapes are in a hot truck for too long it can warp them and they will no longer work. Plan ahead to keep delicate items out of the heat and make sure you keep your items outside in direct sunlight for as little as possible.
  13. BE KIND to the movers.

  14. Offer your movers some water. They’ll most likely have their own, but they will definitely appreciate the gesture. They are moving all your items including that ridiculously heavy couch, that old tube TV going into donation, and your 500 lb safe. If it’s financially feasible for you to provide lunch, it’s a gesture of goodwill that goes a long way.
  15. PLAN carefully for your KIDS on moving day.

  16. Your children will need a safe place to play, nap and stay out of the way of the moving crew. It’s probably best to find someone to babysit for them at both ends of the move (this is what in-laws are for right?). Keep all important documents like transcripts, vaccination records, birth certificate, and others you might need to register your child at a new school. And to help the kids meet other kids their age in the new neighborhood before school starts, check out local camps, sports leagues and special kid-friendly events to ease their transition into their new community. Read our post on moving with kids.
  17. PLAN for your PETS.

  18. Make arrangements for your pets, in particular dogs and cats. Keep them away from the movers. You can put them in a kennel, take them to a friend’s house, or have them stay at a pet hotel/spa (there are a bunch around LA). The yard is not a good choice for animals during a move, it’s hot, the movers will most likely have to use the back door for large items, and they could leave the yard gate open.

What Not to Pack When Moving:

The benefit of working with the moving company is not having to worry about transporting your items. However, from liability, convenience, and peace of mind standpoint, there are several items that you should transport to your new home in your own vehicle. While you’re packing, place these items and boxes in a separate part of your house to ensure the movers don’t load them into the truck by accident. You can even ask your movers to load these items into your own car or vehicle for you.

The essentials for your first night

After a long day of moving, there is nothing worse than opening all your boxes to find your bed sheets, phone charger, and toilet paper. We highly recommend packing a first night box, full of things you will need to during the first few days in your new home. These items might include:
  • Clothes
  • Toiletries
  • Linens
  • Electronics & chargers
  • Keys
Click here to read our blog on the first night box and download and handy checklist to help you pack it.

Hazardous items that are illegal to ship on a moving truck

For the safety of your shipment, there are several items that are illegal to move on our moving trucks. These items are flammable or combustible, so they cannot be moved on the truck as a safety precaution to prevent fires. Other items, such as cleaning agents and bleach, are both flammable and if they leak they could potentially ruin your furniture on the shipment. Be sure to discard these items before your move or move them in your own vehicle.
  • Aerosol cans regardless of content
  • Heating agents such as Sterno
  • Nail polish/remover
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Any type of gas in bottles or tanks including propane or oxygen (we can move lawnmowers etc. if the gas tank is empty)
  • Paints, varnishes, solvents, thinners and oils
  • Ammonia, bleach and other household cleaning agents
  • Chlorine granules or powder
  • Muriatic acid (also called hydrochloric acid)
  • Auto batteries
  • Charcoal/lighter fluid
  • Matches and lighters
  • Ammunition
  • Fireworks & flares
  • Fertilizer
  • Any other combustible product

Valuables, medication, and important documents

Although the crew is trustworthy and careful, we recommend transporting your small valuables and irreplaceable items as well as items that contain personal information in your own vehicle. Also remember to pack items that you may need during the course of your move, such as medication, closing documents, and laptops, to take on your own. Items that should not be moved on the truck include:
  • Valuable Jewelry
  • Cash, gift cards, and checkbooks
  • Guns and firearms
  • Valuable furs
  • Hard-to-replace documents such as birth & death certificates, marriage certificates, deeds and other important documents
  • Documents you may need for your closing
  • Laptops or computer hard drives
  • Social security cards
  • Insurance policies
  • Ashes
  • Passports
  • Stocks, bonds, and securities
  • Valuable collections such as wine or stamps or coins
  • Family photos and videos
  • Small heirlooms
Also, don’t forget, any items that are moved on the truck that exceed a value of $5,000 should be noted on a Declaration of Extraordinary Value form.

Perishable items

If you are doing a multi-day or long-distance move, there are many items that should not be moved on the truck because they may be ruined in transit due to temperature changes on the truck. These items include:
  • Frozen/refrigerated food
  • Plants and potted trees
  • Open non-perishable food items
  • Wine (click here for our blog on wine transport alternatives)
Transporting these items on your own will go a long way in preventing issues and ensuring you have a smooth relocation. If  you ever have any questions about what can or cannot be moved, you can ask your relocation coordinator.

NATIONAL COFFEE DAY:

Today is National Coffee Day. Why does a moving company care about National Coffee Day, you ask? We know how important that daily cup of joe is, so we provide a morning coffee service the day of our customers’ moves.
According to the National Coffee Association, 61% of Americans drink coffee every day. Given our love of coffee, we wanted to ensure our customers can enjoy a cup, especially on the day the coffee maker is all packed up. Latte, americano or drip, we take our customers’ orders ahead of time to ensure they are waking up to their favorite brew.

Compare Moving Companies: Get The Best Moving Rates:

To say that something – a product, a service, or an idea – is the best one out there will mean absolutely nothing if that something cannot be possibly compared to other similar products, services or ideas. Without proper comparison analysis, bold statements that contain phrases such as the bestthe cheapest and the greatest will often fall flat like a pancake.
For example, if you happen to be better at chess than your childhood friend Mike and your next door neighbor Jason, that fact alone won’t automatically make you the best chess player in your city. Ultimately, you will need to compare your chess skills to other chess players as well (participate in a few local chess tournaments, for example) to prove that you’re as good as you think you are.
Now, if you’re about to move to another house or apartment, the thing that will guarantee the success of your relocation project is to choose a full service moving company that will be experienced and competent enough to take care of the toughest aspects of your house move. And to do this the right way, you will need to know how to compare moving companies so that your decision about which mover to hire is both educated and informed.
Remember that comparing movers is all about comparing moving company rates, followed by comparison of their moving services, and then there’s the final step of comparing moving companies reviews before you make up your mind which mover to trust with your prized possessions.
Ready for some comparison analyses of professional moving companies?

How to compare moving companies?

There are so many professional moving companies out there that it can be really hard to select the right one in terms of moving rates, quality of services and professional attitude. And to make things even more complicated for you when you find yourself in dire need of a reliable relocation partner, each moving company promises to do an outstanding job, each one swears that they are absolutely the best, and worst of all – each one vows that they offer the lowest prices you can possible find.
And after a while, you will probably find yourself totally confused who to trust – after all, it’s virtually impossible that all movers are the best and have the cheapest moving rates at the same time. So, what should you do? How do you sift through so many moving companies without getting lost? How do you possibly get to the mover that will meet at least a few of your requirements and fulfill some of your needs as a shipper of household goods?
Fortunately, there’s a good way to do just that, and the name of that successful approach is moving company comparison. By knowing how to compare moving and storage companies, you will be able to quickly discard the movers that are just not right for you until only one proves to be worthy enough.
Should you ever have a hard time deciding between equally good movers, use the following chart to compare moving companies and make the best selection for you, your belongings and your budget. For your convenience, feel free to download the comparison chart as a PDF document, and then print it out to compare your movers and choose the one that is best for you.

The importance of in-home surveys

If you’re not sure where to begin the search process for interstate or intrastate movers, then you should definitely take a look at our groundbreaking 31.5 steps to choosing a moving company. There, you will learn how critical it is to do a thorough research to find a high quality mover, and thus do what’s necessary to protect your possessions, money, and more importantly – your nervous system.
The very first step you should take – the one that will give you plenty of signs about what type of movers you are dealing with – is to get price estimates.
  • Fill up a quick moving quote and then let a few professional moving companies contact you for visual surveys of your home, followed by the issuance of movers estimates in writing.
  • The movers that will get back to you will all be properly licensed and adequately insured, so you can rest assured that dishonest attempts at moving fraud will be out of the question.
  • Some companies may try to give you price estimates over the phone, or via e-mail. The best advice in such situations is to say no because such estimates cannot possibly be accurate enough to give you realistic expectations of how much you will pay in the end. Instead, request free in-home consultations that will result in much more accurate moving quotes.
  • How to compare movers
Schedule in-home consultations with professional movers to get good answers to come very important questions.
Schedule in-home consultations with at least 3 reputable movers. Those in-home surveys are much more important than you can imagine. Experienced surveyors will visit your home at a pre-arranged day and time, and will have a closer look at all the things you intend to move to your new home. Show them every single household item you want moved so that they can provide you with an estimate that will be as close to the final bill as possible.
  • The moving experts that will survey your home will also look for possible problems on Moving day. Such problematic circumstances include but are not limited to overweight household items (pianospool tablesoversized couches, or anything that weighs more than approx. 100 lbs.), oddly shaped or custom furniture pieces, valuable antique furniture, fragile items that require special packing, narrow hallways, multiple flights of stairs, broken or missing elevators, inability to park the moving truck close to the residential building, and so on.
  • After the survey is over, each moving company representative will furnish you with a moving estimate in writing. And this is exactly what you have been waiting for – a genuine chance to compare moving company quotes.

Compare moving estimates

Holding a few moving estimates in your hand, you can now begin the process of comparing national moving companies, or comparing local moving companies if that’s the better option for you. Here are the guidelines on how to compare movers quotes so that you can really benefit from the offers you have received:
  • Price. Without a doubt, the price on a mover’s quote will often either seal the deal, or break it. Most of the times, comparing moving prices seems easy and straightforward but the price alone should never be the deciding factor – be careful not to get lured by promises that are too sweet to be true (see below). Nevertheless, the final estimated price will have a strong impact on your decision, and that’s perfectly understandable as you won’t want to pay more than it is absolutely necessary. (What’s the average moving cost?)
  • Lowball estimates. If you’ve used our free cost estimator tool, then you won’t have to worry about being scammed by dishonest movers because all moving companies in our database have been rigorously checked in advance. But if you still get a moving company quote with a price that is considerably lower than the rest of the estimates, then that uncharacteristically low price could be a sign of potential moving fraud. Movers estimates that are too good to be true (lowball estimates) might prove to be fraudulent. In such cases, what you must do is contact the mover and request clarification as to why the price is so low. If their answer is not satisfactory enough, don’t risk hiring their services. You must know how to stay protected when moving house – take a look at the ultimate moving fraud prevention guide by the U.S. Department of Transportation (Household Goods Moving Fraud).
  • Additional services. Some people concentrate on the price so intently that they forget to take a good look at all the additional services marked on the quotes. The estimates you have received must contain detailed information about all the additional services the mover will need to complete to get the job done, plus the specific extra services you yourself have requested, and their respective rates. Additional services may include packing, unpacking, crating, disassembly and re-assembly of furniture, hoisting, temporary storage, shuttle services, split pickup and delivery, and so on. Read about the best ways to save money on additional moving services.
The moment you have completed the major task of comparing moving estimates, you should be either left with one clear winner or you may still be undecided, with a couple of attractive offers to choose from. To help you single out the winning bid, you are strongly advised to compare moving company reviews – that is, to read what people had to say about the movers you have shortlisted.

Compare moving companies reviews

Star ratings of moving companies
Overall performance ratings of moving companies (star ratings) can help you make the right choice.
To leave feedback is a very important step, both for service providers and recipients of the corresponding service. Once a specific service has been received, there is always feedback about how well the service providers did what they were paid to do. In the majority of cases, it comes down to a personal choice whether a customer will choose to make their opinion known through various communication channels, or whether they will prefer to keep it to themselves.
In the moving industry, that all-important feedback comes in the form of moving reviews that people leave after their respective moves are over. Interestingly enough, great moving companies understand the significance of that crucial step and do their best to satisfy their customers by offering them, in the best case scenarios, quality moving services at affordable prices.
The winning formula? Pleased clients will happily spread the word, and then new customers will appear, as if by magic, in need of low cost, safe, and reliable moving services.
  • Step 1: To initiate the moving company comparison, access the most reputable websites that offer real customer reviews of moving companies: MyMovingReviewsYelpBBB.
  • Step 2: Input the names of the movers you’re researching, one by one, and read what former clients had to say about their relocation experiences with the companies.
  • Step 3: While comparing moving companies reviews, be mindful that the testimonials and overall ratings are there to guide you in order to get a general idea of what you expect. Take super positive and super negative reviews with a grain of salt as sometimes such extreme reviews prove to be fake.
  • Step 4: As a rule of thumb, you should stay away from a moving company with an overwhelming amount of negative reviews and low performance ratings on the top company reviews websites.

The final comparison step? Moving company research

We all know that moving is not easy. So, if you are one of the millions of people who can’t move by themselves for one reason or another or if you have calculated that a self-move will definitely be the more expensive option (almost always the case with long distance moves across the country), then you must consider hiring reputable cross country movers.
As mentioned earlier, reading what different customers have said about the services of a moving company and how clients have rated their overall experience with the movers, will give you a good head start in your search for the best relocation service provider.
Yes, moving reviews and ratings will provide you with valuable pointers but the information you manage to extract from them can only serve you as a guideline. So, in order to get a better idea of which moving companies to consider for your move, you’re going to have to do a more extensive research.
Opinions are one thing, but hard facts are what will ultimately help you decide which professional movers to hire for your forthcoming house move.
  • Properly licensed movers
The mover you choose must be properly licensed by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
DOT: All interstate movers are required to be licensed by the U.S. Department of Transportation in order to operate within the country. This licensing information can be easily checked online at the department’s website in the form of a concise electronic record (USDOT number). This number serves as a proof that you’re dealing with a legitimate moving company.
  • AMSA & BBB: Active membership with the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) and proper accreditation by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) are two additional strong indicators that the moving companies you have narrowed down will provide the outstanding quality services that you are looking for.
  • Friends: Another good option to get a clearer picture of which moving companies deserve your attention is to ask your circle of friends, colleagues and neighbors, and poll their opinion. The chances are that at least one of them moved recently or know somebody else who did, so they can supply you the valuable feedback you need. The easiest way to reach most of your friends at once is to post a short message on your preferred social network, something like, “I need recommendations for a good mover. Please advise.” just like checking out moving reviews and testimonials, the suggestions you receive from your pals is important to reach an informed decision about which professional mover to hire.

There are many good moving companies out there and it has never been easier to get multiple quotes than it is today. Everything happens online, so you just have to find, research and compare various moving companies in order to get the biggest bang for your buck. Try the online moving cost estimator at the top of the page for a fast and easy calculation.

Top 10 Avoidable Moving Mistakes:

Moving takes time and energy. At Pedro's Moving & Storage, we are big on hassle-free moving. Moving can seem overwhelming, but with the proper preparation you can avoid a lot of unnecessary stress. Here are some of the most common mistakes people make when they move. Check out our tips on how you can easily steer clear of some moving disasters
Not Researching Companies
Begin researching companies 2-3 months prior to your move out date. Make sure your movers carry a moving license. Check out their record with the Better Business Bureau, and ask for references. Don’t forget to ask for an in-home estimate. It’s important to plan out your budget ahead of time.
Not Planning Packing
Packing isn’t as easy as it looks. There’s a significant amount of planning that goes into packing. We recommend taking inventory before and after packing. Start packing 8 weeks before the move date. Gather the right size boxes and packing materials. Sort through your items, and toss out anything you don’t need. Get a head start by packing the things you scarcely use first.
Not Labeling & Sorting Boxes
Label your boxes – write down the contents of the box, and include handling instructions for fragile or heavy objects. This will help your movers load the boxes accordingly, and it will also be beneficial for you when you have to unpack.
Leaving Your Valuables With The Movers
As great as your movers are, the best way to ensure your valuables make it to your new home safely is to pack them with you. Safely wrap and pack your jewelry, heirlooms, professional camera, important documents and any prized collections with you in your carry-on or car.
Packing Flammables & Other Non-Movables
Communicate with your moving company in advance to check if your movers can transport any flammable items or explosive items, such as firearms, your barbeque grill or your alcohol. We don’t want to put anyone in danger during your move, and we also want to risk damaging any of your items.
Lifting And Carrying Everything
Don’t attempt to lift and carry everything into the truck. Save your back, and use dollies, carts and other moving equipment to lessen the burden.
Forgetting Rover Needs To Move Too!
Don’t forget about your pets! They need to prepare to move to. If you are flying to your new home, check with your vet and your airline for proper flying procedures. Make sure your pet has all its immunizations up to date, its insurance, and all of its identification tags.
Not Preparing A “Survival Kit”
Pack a small bag with the items you will need immediately during the first week at your new home. We recommend including enough clothes to wear for a week, snacks and non-perishable foods, a first aid kit, your cell phone charger, and light tools for opening your boxes.
Forgetting To Change Your Address
Contact your postal office to set up mail forwarding to your new address. Don’t forget to change your mailing address with your banks, health insurance and car insurance.
Not Checking Your Insurance
Knowledge is power! Have a good understanding of what your insurance entails. Know how much it covers in damages and what exactly it covers.
